    What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is exercise for the muscles in your mouth and face — your tongue, lips, jaw, and the muscles that control breathing, chewing, and swallowing. When these muscles aren’t working together the way they should, it can affect everything from how you breathe to how you sleep. Through guided exercises, we retrain these muscles to work the way they’re meant to. Schedule your free consultation today to find out if myofunctional therapy could help you or your child.

Carie Satterburg, OMT, orofacial myofunctional therapist in Saint Germain, Wisconsin

    Carie Satterburg, OMT

Hi, I’m Carie Satterburg, OMT — an orofacial myofunctional therapist serving Saint Germain in Vilas County and Northern Wisconsin virtually.

I’m committed to helping you uncover the root cause of your symptoms, not just work around them. Together we identify muscle dysfunction of the tongue, lips, and cheeks, build your awareness of what those muscles are doing, and practice exercises that correct improper movement and habit patterns.

Every program is built around you and where you’re starting from. And when it helps, I collaborate with your dentist, orthodontist, ENT, or physician so your care fits together instead of happening in pieces.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about myofunctional therapy and our practice.

    Oral Ties

Tongue, lip, and buccal ties, also known as tethered oral tissues, may be involved with orofacial myofunctional disorders and your symptoms. Here’s what they are, how they can affect you at any age, and when a release may be part of the plan.

    Tongue Ties

Tongue ties are often thought of as an infant feeding issue, but they can affect us throughout our lifetime — including speech, swallowing, function, and even the development of the jaw.

Unless severe, a tongue tie cannot be diagnosed with a quick glance. Other factors need to be taken into account, like range of motion, how the tie affects function, and related symptoms. A trained professional is able to collect this information from you and use tests and observations to evaluate how the attachment of your tongue may be affecting its function.

    Lip Ties

A lip tie is a tight attachment of the lip to the gums. It can affect how well the lips function, influence the way the jaw grows, and even play a part in whether we breathe through our nose or our mouth.

    Buccal Ties

Buccal ties are the attachments of the cheeks. They can also be assessed and classified as tethered if they are too tight.

    When a Release May Help

Releasing tethered oral tissues is sometimes necessary for a patient to progress through myofunctional therapy. If a tie is very clear from the start, or it becomes clear during therapy that the tie is inhibiting progress, a release may be recommended.
